PRESENTERS AND THEIR PROGRAMS Program 1 – Sep 7, 2011 Judging Competitive Imagery On this date Shiv will present an overview of what is involved in judging a photo competition including what makes a strong image; aspects that result in markdowns including things that make judge cringe; presentation; proper color calibration, etc. Projected digital images will be shown by way of example. Shiv is well known to our club as judge, guest lecturer, and digital image commentator. He belongs to multiple photographic clubs and associations and serves as Chairman of the Nature Division, PSA; Director of the slide, instructional and essay sets, PSA; Director of the Nature Division Permanent Image Collection, Vice President of the Digital Circuit NECCC; a member of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association, the Stony Brook Camera Club and the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists. Shiv is a past President of the Stony Brook Camera Club; and the Gateway Camera Club. He is a photographer, educator, and technologist who has earned numerous awards both nationally and internationally. Program 2 – Oct 5, 2011 Macro-photography - Up-Close and Personal Art is an award winning Nature photographer who will present an overview of macrophotography using many examples of his award winning images and will include a “how-to” of macro photography including adapting standard lenses, specialized equipment, a demonstration of his homemade macro rig, a review of recommended techniques and tips, etc. He'll have his macro-rig with which to experiment as well as some small subjects that are particularly good for testing the process. Program 3 – Nov 2, 2011 Confessions of an Architectural Photographer We all know Sarah as a frequent judge, but on this date she will discuss architectural photography, the area of photography which embodies the main focus of her efforts. She will include many of her images which have appeared on the covers of numerous magazines and will address area of importance to address in producing such imagery including choosing the right lens, getting the right exposure, composition and framing, dealing with harsh light, and post processing techniques and tips including HDR. She will even share some of her secrets on producing a dramatic, albeit non-competitive image. Program 4 – Dec 7, 2011 Event Shooting… Smile! On this night Bruce will cover such diverse subjects as weddings, press conferences, reunions, fund raisers, society affairs, etc. including the challenges faced along with possible solutions. This will include a variety of issues such as dealing with variable lighting conditions at a single venue, use of a flash, crowd management in framing a shot, composition, what to do in poor situations, tight venues, bad weather, etc. He will also discuss what has been required to remain in business for over 30 years. He will use examples of his imagery to demonstrate the points he makes. Having spent considerable time as a magazine and advertising photographer in NYC, shooting covers for the likes of Time and US News and World Reports Bruce now focuses his lens primarily on event photography and works in metro-NYC and Connecticut. Program 5 – Jan 4, 2012 Photojournalism, Page 1 On this date using imagery he shot in the field, Peter’s talk will cover the landscape of photojournalism from how to get started, lenses typically used, finding the right shooting location, tips on becoming “invisible”, remaining safe in possibly unfriendly situations, approaching strangers as subjects of interest, etc. Peter is an award winning photojournalist who has worked as freelance photographer all over the world as well as a staff photographer at a busy city newspaper. His images have graced the pages of Newsweek, The New York Times, L.A. Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Courier International, Chicago Tribune, International Herald Tribune, Boston Globe, MSNBC.com, CNN.com, ABCNews.com and various other international media outlets. He was named the 2006 and 2010 National Press Photographers Association Region 1 - Photographer of the Year. He has won the New England Newspaper & Press Association - Photographer of the Year four times ('04, '07, '09, & '10). He has also won five Public Occurrences Awards ('04 -'08) for Superior Achievement in Photojournalism by the New England Newspaper Association. Program 6 – Feb 1, 2012 The Gray Area of Black & White Photography On this date Miah will discuss what it takes to produce an award winning black and white image. He will focus on the importance of achieving a balance of mid-tones along with how to avoid blown-out or under-exposed images and post-processing techniques and tips. He will use his own imagery as well as that from other well-known photographers to help demonstrate the points he discusses. Miah (known locally as Nate) started working as a photographer in 1987. Jobs he has been assigned include traveling overseas to record the collapse of Eastern Europe, documenting modern society’s impact on unexplored islands off the coast of Africa, and underwater photography on numerous Hollywood movie sets. His clients include National Geographic, National Geographic Channel, New York Times, AP, The City SUN, World Wildlife Fund, American Red Cross, NBC, CBS, BBC , Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures and numerous print publications. Awards include (POY) Picture of the Year magazine pictorial, Chicago film festival, EPIC festival, Innerspace Houston. Early in his career time spent working at the headquarters of Magnum Photos in NYC, with Eric Hartmann in New York, exposed him to an amazing array of image makers and a photographic perspective on which to focus his life. Program 7 – Feb 29, 2012 Sports Photography, No Time-Outs Allowed In his talk, Rob will address the very wide field of sports photography including, how to establish oneself as a sports photographer, the most appropriate camera and lens combinations to use, how to setup your camera’s shooting options for the best results, where to position yourself for the best possible outcomes, what extra or complimentary gear to have with you, how best to deal with adverse weather conditions, tips on post-processing techniques to save time, how to protect your equipment and your work, as well as a host of other relevant subjects. Rob is a professional Sports Photographer living in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area where he freelances under his own name shooting a variety of sports from youth level to the professional level including: football, soccer, baseball, basketball, surfing, golf, gymnastics, volleyball, motor cross, BMX racing, road bicycle racing, ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, women field hockey, classic/modern dance and club polo. As a contract photographer for US Presswire, he shoots college and professional sports, serving as their regular Penn State football photographer. His pictures often appear in the online versions of Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Fox Sports, USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times to name a few. One of his pictures taken at the December, 2010 Heisman Trophy award ceremony in Times Square was selected as one of US Presswire’s “The Year in Sports 2010” pictures. Program 8 – Mar 7, 2012 Low Light: Finding Your Way In the Dark On this date Lance will discuss the history of low light and night photography, the basic techniques required to begin shooting in low light conditions, necessary equipment, focusing in near total darkness, determining the correct shutter time, painting with light, post-processing techniques and tips, etc. In 1989, Lance moved to San Francisco to study with Steve Harper at the Academy of Art University and has been photographing at night ever since. In 1997, Lance co-founded The Nocturnes Night Photography Workshops with Tim Baskerville in San Francisco, and has been teaching workshops and classes on Night Photography and Light Painting since that time. In 2000, he developed a college level semester course for the New England School of Photography in Boston, which he continues to teach year round, along with advanced Night Photography and Light Painting courses. In 2003, Lance founded the Mono Lake Photo Workshops which has produced an annual Night Photography workshop every year since then, and two Night Photography Festivals in 2006 and 2011.
In 2010, Lance’s first book, Night Photography - Finding Your Way In The Dark was published by Focal Press to wide acclaim. The book is now in its third printing and has been translated into four languages. Lance is currently working on another book for Focal on Light Painting, which will be published in 2012. His work can be found in many permanent and private collections.
