MAY AND JUNE NEWS!!!! The following programs are scheduled during the month of May. Members and visitors are welcome to attend all programs. Our final event of the year is our annual banquet on June 3rd. MAY 6th MEETING On Wednesday, May 6th, we have a must-see program! Don’t miss it! Gary Stanley, MNEC, of Swampscott, will be presenting a dual program on composition & lighting and image preparation, the “keys to success”. Gary writes: “Digital has changed nothing! We still need to exercise good photographic technique no matter how the image will be captured, digital or film. This becomes especially important for those of us who do not wish to spend all our time editing an image in the computer. Getting it right in the camera first makes the most sense, and composition and lighting play a key role in the success of our photography.” Gary believes that Photoshop is for adjustments, not repairs. The objective is to spend more time photographing, and less time in front of the computer. Start with a good sharp, properly exposed image. Get it right in the camera first! Gary Farber of Hunts Photo and Video of Melrose will be co-sponsoring this program. He and fellow workers will have tables set up with many of their products and some specials for our members. Come early, around 6:30 p.m. to shop. Check out Hunt’s website at www.wbhunt.com. If you have a special request of products you would like Hunts to bring for you, please email Gary at digitalguygary@wbhunt.com a few days before our meeting and come early, around 6:15 p.m. to pick them up. MAY 20th MEETING Our meeting on May 20th will be our Image of the Year (IOY) competition. For this competition, there are no classes, so Beginners, Advanced and Masters compete against each other. The categories are Open, Nature, and Creative for digital images, and Color and Black & White for prints. Up to three images/prints may be entered in each category as long as each image/print won a ribbon during the year. If you are unsure of which of your images have won a ribbon, go to our website at www.capecodviewfinders.org, click on Competitions on the left, and scroll down to the Competition Schedule 2008 – 2009. For each competition on the schedule, click on Results and you’ll find a list of the winning images/prints for that competition. Tom Backman, our competition chair, has all the digital images on file. No later than May 13th (one week before the competition), send Tom an email at capecodviewfinders@gmail.com indicating which digital images you want entered for Open, Nature, and Creative. (Remember: a maximum of three per category.) Also to make his life easier, tell him which month each image was previously entered and in which class so that he can locate the image more easily. All prints must be registered by 6:45 p.m. the evening of the competition. Again, a maximum of three prints in Color and three prints in Black & White. JUNE 3rd ANNUAL BANQUET Our final meeting of the year will be our awards banquet and program on June 3rd at the Yarmouth House Restaurant at 335 Route 6A in West Yarmouth. All members are encouraged to attend and bring a guest. Festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. At 6:30 p.m. dinner will begin, followed by awards, and then a program by Alison Shaw. Marge Uhl, our Hospitality chair, will provide the details and take reservations for dinner. Alison Shaw is a fine art and editorial photographer who lives and works on Martha's Vineyard. Alison first moved to the island in 1975 after graduating from Smith College, and took a job at the weekly newspaper the Vineyard Gazette, where she worked as a photographer and graphic designer for nearly 25 years. The island has provided the inspiration and subject matter for much of her color and black-and-white photography. Over 8000 of her original fine art prints are in public and private collections. Alison's work appears regularly in Yankee Magazine, Martha's Vineyard Magazine and Cape Cod Life. She has also published several books. Alison teaches photography workshops in Venice, Maine, Nova Scotia, Santa Fe and on Martha's Vineyard for the Maine Media Workshops, Santa Fe Workshops, Rocky Mountain School of Photography, and the Alison Shaw Workshops. Alison Shaw Photography and Gallery is located in an old single-engine firehouse at 88 Dukes County Avenue in the heart of the Oak Bluffs Arts District. Alison’s presentation will provide you with inspiration for the summer! Don’t miss this great program! SUMMER! After the annual banquet, we’re all on our own to enjoy the lazy days of summer with family and friends. Just be sure to keep your camera handy, take lots of pictures, and experiment with what you’ve learned from Gary Stanley’s and Alison Shaw’s programs. We’ll see you again at our first meeting of the 2009 – 2010 season on Wednesday, September 2nd.
